Roger Aiken of Banbridge Cycling Club won the Ulster Cyclo Cross Championships hosted by Newry Wheelers Cycling Club in Kilbroney Park last Sunday.

Despite the wet and bitterly cold weather a large turnout lined up for the Ulster Championships which also was Round 3 of the Irish Super-cross series. The top class field included Pro mountain bike rider Conor Mc Convey and top cross riders from Dublin Joe Mc Call and Ryan Sherlock.

From the start it was Aiken and Mc Convey who set the pace and broke clear from a group of four including Lewis Ferguson, Joe Mc Call and Ryan Sherlock. By half distance it was all back together with a 7 strong group leading an ever fragmented pack of riders behind.

All the while local man Pete Mc Conville was riding a great race to try to bridge across to the leading group and also battle for the first Vet?s prize.

As the final lap approached it was Mc Convey and Aiken who had broken clear again and with the winner surely to be decided between them Aiken the 2008 Irish Cyclo cross champion put the power down to ride clear to a great win with Mc Convey taking 2nd spot. Ryan Sherlock of Dublin completed the top 3 with Glen Kinning taking 6th spot and the final Ulster medal.

Peter Mc Conville finished in 12th and first in the Ulster Vets category; other Newry Wheelers rider Kevin Lynch and Ivan Mc Conville rode excellent to take 23rd and 33rd respectively.
